Our Vision and Purpose
Our Mission/Purpose is: "To extend the kingdom of God by empowering people through personal experience with God and training."
We believe God has a plan for everyone and that each one of us can find our place of ministry and service through the life of the church. We have a strong commitment to the concept of "the priesthood of all believers" found in 1 Peter 2. We also recognise that the church is Christ's Body and that He works through all the members just as He determine.
Leadership
Gateways Christian Fellowship is an eldership-governed church, operating a collaborative team leadership based on Ephesians 4:12,13. Our senior leader, who carries the vision and direction for the fellowship, regularly meets with Team Leaders who serve as heads of the different functions/departments of church life, most of whom are volunteers. There are also a number of credentialled ministers serving in various other capacities as volunteers or partly paid staff.
History
Our fellowship was formed as a church plant from Central Baptist in the early 1960's. Mightily impacted by the Charismatic Renewal, we became known as Awapuni Christian Fellowship, then, as we experienced considerable growth, we moved to the centre of town and became known as Christian Centre. In 1984 we purchased our Church Street property and took on our original legal name, Palmerston North Christian Fellowship. After a ten-year period of transition from the late 1990's to 2009 we adopted a new name for a new season, Gateways Christian Fellowship.
Membership
We encourage formal membership of our church as an expression of commitment. This is not compulsory in order to attend our church. We believe God has a plan for everyone and that each one of us can find our place of ministry and service through the life of the Church or in God's wider Kingdom purpose.
